A couple of Mexican senecios have thick succulent stems and bear thin, palmately-veined leaves in loose rosettes at their apices. S. velatus is one of these, forming a shrub or small tree 1.5 to 5 m tall, like the related S. praecox. Both have showy, yellow, daisy-like flower heads, but S. velatus is distinctive in its dense white arachnoid tomentum on the stem tips.
