This passion-flower relative is described as a slender climber to 5 m. with a conical to rounded above-ground tuber to 1 m in diameter (see Rauh’s Succulent and Xerophytic Plants of Madagascar, Vol. 1, pp. 314-316). Seedlings have a knobby, melted-candle appearance and usually have a distinctly swollen hypocotyl, that portion of the stem below the point of attachment of the cotyledons that soon fall away.
