ISI 2011-11. Adenia spinosa Burtt Davy Out of Stock

This species is unusual in this mostly unarmed genus of caudiciform to pachycaulous lianas in bearing thin thorns along the slender, vining stems. These thorns are derived from tendrils that are visible in new growth but soon fall away leaving a persistent base. The vines arise from a thickened stem that is at first a tapering pachycaul but that can develop into a massive caudex to more than 50 cm tall and 2 m across. The species ranges from northern S. Africa into Zimbabwe. We offer HBG 104734, seedlings already showing significant swelling of the pachycaulous base. $8.
