ISI 2021-7. Aloe camperi ‘May Day’ J. Trager

Aloe camperi is widespread in Eritrea and northern Ethiopia, and so has entered cultivation several times. The most commonly cultivated form seems to flower dependably in April. However, the selection offered here, as the name implies, flowers a bit later, in May. It also has slightly more slender and elongate racemes than other forms. The flower color seems to be sensitive to light exposure such that a clump grown near the canopy of an overhanging tree will produce slightly paler flowers in the shade than in the sun, providing a two-toned display. This response of flower color to light intensity is not uncommon but seemed more pronounced in this cultivar than in many other aloes when we grew a large patch half in the shade of an overhanging Aloe barberae. We offer rooted cuttings of HBG 10654. $10.
