ISI 2021-11. Aloe vaotsanda Decary

Last offered in 2004, we now have another collection of this solitary, arborescent species, potentially growing to 4 m tall. Native to Toliara Province of Madagascar, it is said to be confined to a narrow coastal belt extending some 250 km from south of Ambovombe west to Androka on the Linta River. There seems to be some variation within this range. Our prior offering, ISI 2004-14, had distinctly glaucous leaves. The plants offered here have greener leaves with a tendency to blush red under stress. The inflorescences are branched panicles with distinctively arching racemes of red buds opening yellow. We offer HBG 137728, given a new accession number to distinguish this generation, seedlings from controlled pollination of HBG 108187. The parents were from seed collected by A. Viossat in 1998, 3 km S of Tsiombe, Madagascar. $10.
