ISI 2021-27. Sansevieria bella L.E.Newton

This choice species was described by Len Newton in the C & S Journal (72 (4): 224-226) in 2000. It resembles the familiar Sansevieria suffruticosa, with its arching, cylindrical, tapering leaves. These are distinctly laterally compressed, have a scabrous epidermis (like sandpaper) and more prominent, silvery banding, which makes it a very pretty (bella is latin for pleasant or beautiful) species indeed. We grow two accessions of this species. HBG 93104, the type collection, Newton #3945, of which a few are available. Our larger crop, however, is HBG 106816. These are propagations of another of Len’s several collections of this species, the one Len sent to Gordon Rowley: Newton & Foresti #5559, collected January 20, 1996, at about 1800 m altitude in Oloyiangalani located in Kojon'ga Gorge, Kajiado County, Kenya. $20.
