This is the latest introduction of Karen Zimmerman’s “Fantasy Aloes” bred for attractive, colorful teeth. In this case, they evoke a tapestry-like pattern and texture reminiscent of a carpet bag. Extending the analogy, however, the result may be viewed by some as a usurpation of the place of species in horticulture. But this is no horticultural carpetbagger — it deserves a place in our collections. Picking up on the mixed metaphor of the cultivar name, close inspection of the leaf surface can transport one’s imagination to a fantasy world, as if on a magic carpet, populated by crimson peaks and verdant valleys. So come along, if you “like to dream” — to quote the classic rock song of 1969 by Steppenwolf — you are invited to take this horticultural magic carpet ride. After composing this rather purple prose and coming back to earth, we checked in with Karen. The cultivar name is actually inspired by Mary Poppins and her magic bag that always seemed to produce whatever was required. These aren’t called fantasy aloes for nothing! And this one is … practically perfect in every way! Rooted plants from tissue culture of HBG 141104. $15.
