A caudiciform (at least when grown from seed) E. milii relative with slender stems covered with fine bristly prickles between the larger paired stipular spines and delicate lance-linear leaves. The stem tips bear clusters of bright red, beak-like inflorescences with paired cyathophylls enclosing the flowers, similar to those of the related genus Pedilanthus.
