Some years ago, we ordered a large number of Sempervivum cultivars from Squaw Mountain Gardens in Estacada, OR, to test the tolerance of these mostly montane European and Asian succulents to southern California conditions. We have gradually whittled down our holdings to only those that thrive and keep their rich colors—others tend to blanch in our summer heat. Here, ‘Bloodstone’ stands out. S. heuffelii is variable in size, color and pubescence of the leaves, but generally has larger rosettes (to 10 cm across) than most other members of the genus. The leaves are spinose-mucronate tipped and have ciliate margins. In ‘Bloodstone’ they are otherwise glabrous and maintain a rich purplish color throughout the year. Rooted offsets of HBG 90234. $6.
