Described in 1995 in Cact Suc Mex (40: 92-96), this is a close ally of A. pendula. Like that species, it is a tropical cliff-dweller of the Polycephala group with rosettes to about 30 cm across. It is abundant but restricted to limestone cliffs locally known as El Encajonado along the Río Uxpanapa, in SE Veracruz, Mexico. This is one of the wettest regions of the state, receiving more than 300 cm (100 in) of rain annually. Nevertheless, it has adapted well to cultivation in our nursery without any special attention. However, it has flowered a couple of times with stunted inflorescences (less than half the typical meter length) but has proven to be self-fertile as well as being a prolific bulbil-former. Rooted bulbils of HBG 91542, M Kimnach 3384A, a plant obtained from M Cházaro, 14 Feb 1993. $7.50.
