ISI 2006-26. Monadenium ‘Nicodemus’ Jankalski Out of Stock

This cross of Monadenium rubellum with M. stoloniferum was made by Steven Jankalski in 1989 to prove Susan Carter’s assertion that the two parent species are more closely related to one another than they are to the species where they were previously assigned as varieties by Bally (M. montanum var. rubellum Bally, 1959, and M. rhizophorum var. stoloniferum Bally, 1961, were both elevated to specific rank by Carter in 1987). While the parents are obviously close enough to produce a viable hybrid, the cross took numerous attempts to succeed, a fact attributable to the challenge of pollinating monadeniums, a task that requires skillful pollen placement and fortuitous timing. The cultivar name is derived from Nicodemus Road in Reisterstown, MD, the home of Patt Gobbel’s greenhouse and plant shop, A Growing Concern, where Steve achieved this notable cross. Its name also alludes to both the parent species being “reborn” at specific rank as the biblical character Nicodemus was “born again” in the spiritual sense.
