This cultivar name (coined by Mark Fryer, formerly of C & J Cactus Nursery where we obtained our parent plants) presents a rather unflattering, albeit memorable, image of what is a choice selection of this already deservedly-popular Bolivian species; the name is evocative of the exceptionally woolly areoles of this form. Grown by most nurseries and collectors as E. subdenudata, the more conservative taxonomists of the day consider this to be a relatively spineless form of E. ancistrophora, the catch-all epithet for a number of distinct and collectable entities. In addition to the short-spined and, therefore, easily-handled globular stems, the species produces some of the most gorgeous, pure white, funnelform, fragrant, nocturnal flowers of the genus.
