ISI 2012-7. Agave filifera ‘Compacta’ Out of Stock

Agave filifera is a choice landscape plant with modest-sized rosettes to about 30 cm across. The numerous dagger-like leaves are about 3 cm wide at the base and are elegantly marked with white bud imprints and bear marginal filaments that give the plant its name. The dwarf cultivar ‘Compacta’ shares these features but on leaves only a third the length of the typical form. Leaves per rosette number fewer than 100 (currently 60 on our largest specimen) versus more than 300 for the normal form. We acquired this cultivar from Abbey Garden in the early 1980s. Over the next couple of decades at the Huntington it offset sparingly to yield about 20 plants. When our tissue culture lab came into being, we realized the opportunity to produce more rapidly sufficient quantities for ISI introduction. Rooted plants of HBG 96392, $20.
