Bruce Bayer described this variety in 2002 in Haworthiad 16(2): 63, after completing more fieldwork following the publication of Haworthia Revisited (1999). It differs from var. decipiens in having broader, incurved, flatter leaves that resemble those of H. arachnoidea with its translucent inter-venation and overall appearance. The somewhat green color of these plants warranted the variety name virella. As in H. arachnoidea the fine, white hairs on the leaves give the appearance that a spider has made this plant its home… or its victim. We offer tissue-cultured plants of three different clones of HBG 108032, plants from Sheilam Nursery, from seed from controlled pollination of M.B. Bayer 6580, plants collected at Meerlust, Barrydale district, in the W. Cape of South Africa. $8.
