This Chilean cactus is described as being variable, a fact which accounts for it redescription under a couple of different names. Then there are the various taxonomic shufflings between genera that have resulted in another gaggle of synonyms. One of the features that varies is epidermal color. Typically this subspecies has a pale crème de minthe color but in some individuals it can be more purplish. This latter form is cultivated under the name Neochilenia jussieui and has been selected for richer coloration as in those offered here. The subspecies is reported from Chile; Antofagasta Province; 20 km N or Paposo. HBG 126026, $8.
