Sulcorebutia canigueralii seems to be the current holding place for a variety of sulcos with short, appressed, pectinate spine clusters. This is one such plant that we received as S. perplexiflora from a chain of Sulcorebutia collectors: ex Ron Monroe (99:01) ex P. Hoffman, Jul 26, 1999, ex Mike Corn. Pilbeam (1985), Sulcorebutia and Weingartia, A Collector's Guide, treats WR 599 as S. pulchra. His A Sulco Gallery (2004) illustrates WR 599 as a plant “put in limbo under S. canigueralii according to AGH” referring to Augustin, Gertel & Hentzschel (2000). The fa. perplexiflora, named by Fred Brandt [not the former Huntington gardens Superintendent of that name from 1965 to 2015!], applies to WR 599, the epithet inspired by the blood red flower color which varies from Cardenas' original description of S. pulchra as having light magenta flowers. Pilbeam (2004) cites the locality as Bolivia; between Sucre and the Rio Chico valley, km 14. Rooted cuts of HBG 101650, $10.
