Flower with a musty fragrance, to 5 inches (13 cm) across. Inner petals obovate, mucronate, light orangish, picoteed in light purplish-mauve, midrib dark orangish or purplish-mauve and forming a delicate “trident” marking with the margins. Outer petals and sepals projecting beyond inners, contrasting pale orangish. Throat-circle light amber. Filaments light orange; anthers large and puffy. Flowers have a musty aroma. Plant forming attractive rounded mounds; stems globular, to 3½ inches (9 cm) in diameter; central spines to ¼ inch (6 mm) long. Named after the Brazilian conservationist who was killed by greedy ranchers for his dedication to preventing destruction of the rain forests. ISI 97-6; HBG 80592, Schick 1293-14.
