Flower to 4½ inches (11 cm) across. Petals slender obovate, recurved even at cool temperatures, ruffled, dark red to magenta with deep reddish glow in the basal portions, midrib pure red. Throat-circle pinkish. Filaments dark purplish-red. Stigma green. Stem to 3½ inches (9 cm) in diameter; central spines forbidding, curved, to more than 1½ inches (42 mm) long.
