Flower to 5½ inches (14 cm) across. Petals oblanceolate, dusky scarlet, tinted bronze-orange at bases, colors lustrous in bright light. Sepals also scarlet, often twisted. Throat-circle white. Throat narrow. Filaments dark red. Plant cespitose, stems to 4 inches (10 cm) in diameter; central spines to 1 inch (24 mm) long. ISI 97-14; HBG 80600, Schick 572-8.
