Flower with a musty fragrance, to 3¾ inches (9.5 cm) across. Petals oblanceolate, flat, deep, satiny red. Throat-circle contrasting pinkish. Filaments magenta; inner stamens restricted to center of flower tube, surrounding style. Stigma green. Stem columnar, quite narrow, to only 2½ inches (6.5 cm) in diameter; areoles closely spaced with interlacing appressed spination; central spines to ⅝ inch (16 mm) long.
